In March, we hit the pavement for another urban hike starting at Alice C. Wainwright Park and walked through some of Brickell’s hidden gems:
- Simpson Park, a natural preserve that encompasses over eight acres of tropical hardwood hammock in the center of Miami’s urban core, one of the last remnants of the famous Brickell Hammock. It is a designated Old Growth Forest Community, making it part of a network of less than 1% of remaining untouched forests in the eastern U.S.
- Miami Circle, a National Historic Landmark and archaeological site located at the mouth of the Miami River. It is the only known evidence of a prehistoric permanent structure cut into the bedrock in the eastern U.S., and artifacts found there are attributed to the Tequesta people.
- The Underline, a 10-mile linear park that will underneath the county’s elevated Metrorail system from Brickell to the Metrorail’s southern terminus at Dadeland South.
It was a beautiful walk highlighting how much natural beauty, history, and culture is in Miami’s urban core. We even saw a manatee! Check out photos from the walk below.
