May 2023 Hike: The Florida Trail on I-75

For our sixth hike, we returned to the Florida Trail with our biggest group yet! This time we started at the I-75 trailhead and headed north, then did part of the Blue Loop and passed Carpenter Camp. The Big Cypress section of the Florida Trail is nearly 40 miles, beginning at US-41 and ending north of I-75 at the border of the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation. Depending on which trailhead you choose and the time of year, your experiences can be wildly different. During our 6.5-mile hike, we spotted several alligators, snakes, and other flora and fauna on completely dry ground (A big difference from our wet walk in November!). May is likely the last of the Everglades dry season, so get out there while you can if you prefer dry feet.
