Urban and wilderness hiking in South Florida.

November 2022 Hike: The Florida Trail on US-41

For our second wilderness hike, we returned to Big Cypress National Preserve to check out the Florida Trail! The trail spans the state of Florida from its southern terminus in the Everglades to Fort Pickens in Pensacola. We began our hike at the southern terminus and were soon met with calf and knee-deep water for a good portion of the hike. For most of the group, it was their first time doing a “wet walk” (a hike through a marsh or swamp).

Shout out to the Florida Trail Association, whose hard-working volunteers help maintain the trail. Check out photos from the hike:

  1. […] For our sixth hike, we returned to the Florida Trail with our biggest group yet! This time we started at the I-75 trailhead and headed north, then did part of the Blue Loop and passed Carpenter Camp. The Big Cypress section of the Florida Trail is nearly 40 miles, beginning at US-41 and ending north of I-75 at the border of the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation. Depending on which trailhead you choose and the time of year, your experiences can be wildly different. During our 6.5-mile hike, we spotted several alligators, snakes, and other flora and fauna on completely dry ground (A big difference from our wet walk in November!). […]
